According to the British Columbia Local Government Act, the Board of Variance is an independent body that considers variances pertaining to the City's Zoning Bylaw (as amended).

The Act allows property owners to appeal to the Board where compliance with the bylaw would impose undue hardship upon them and where the variance is minor.

Board Information

Board of Variance meetings are scheduled following receipt of an application.

 

The Board is established in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Act and shall consist of 5 members apointed by the Council of the City.

The Board has 5 appointed members, and quorum is 3 members.

 

The Board of Variance focuses primarily on hardship relating to matters such as siting, dimensions and size of buildings. A Board of Variance order cannot conflict with Land Title Act covenants or deal with matters in land use permits, land use contracts, floodplain bylaw specifications or phased development agreements.

Appointments will be for a 3 year term.
